Yala National Park — Leopard Safari★★★
The Yala National Park is Sri Lanka's most visited national park — and the place with the highest leopard density in the world. In Block 1, the oldest and most popular section, about 25 leopards live in a relatively small area, which increases the chances of sightings to over 50%.
But Yala is much more than just leopards: Elephant herds roam the bushland, sloth bears climb trees, crocodiles lurk in waterholes, buffaloes wallow in the mud, and over 215 bird species — including the rare Sri Lanka Junglefowl (national symbol) — make the park a paradise for birdwatchers.

💡 Tipp
The morning safari starting at 5:00 AM offers the best chances to see leopards. Block 1 is the most famous section, but also the busiest — Block 5 offers similarly good sightings with significantly fewer jeeps. Ask your driver for alternatives if Block 1 is overcrowded.
Achtung
Yala suffers from overtourism — on peak days, over 300 jeeps crowd into Block 1, causing traffic jams at leopard sightings and stressing the animals. It is much quieter during the week than on weekends.
