Udawalawe — Guaranteed Elephants★★★
If you want to see elephants, Udawalawe is the safest bet in Sri Lanka — the sighting rate is nearly 100%. Around 600 wild elephants live in the park, and on every safari, you encounter dozens of them: herds with calves, solitary bulls, bathing families at the reservoir.
The park is less known than Yala and therefore much quieter — often you share the landscape with only a handful of jeeps. The vegetation is more open than in Yala (grassland instead of bush), making wildlife observation easier.
Elephant Transit Home
Right at the park entrance is the Elephant Transit Home — a sanctuary for orphaned elephant calves. Unlike the more touristy Pinnawala, serious conservation is practiced here: The calves are raised and released into the national park after 4–5 years. Feeding times: 9:00, 12:00, 3:00, 6:00 PM. Entrance: 500 LKR.

💡 Tipp
Udawalawe is halfway between the highlands and the south coast — perfect as a stopover between Ella and Mirissa/Tangalle. The afternoon safari (3:00–6:00 PM) often offers the best lighting conditions for photos, and the elephants are more active.
