Galle Fort — Colonial Jewel★★★
Galle Fort is a perfectly preserved Dutch fortress from the 17th century, jutting into the sea on a peninsula at the southwestern tip of Sri Lanka — a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most atmospheric places on the island.
The fortress was founded by the Portuguese in 1588 and massively expanded by the Dutch from 1640. Within the massive walls, a unique mix has developed: Colonial villas in pastel colors, narrow streets with frangipani trees, trendy boutique hotels, art galleries, cafes, and restaurants — all within a vibrant Sri Lankan residential area with a mosque, temple, and church.

- Fort Walls: A walk on the walls at sunset is a must — the view over the Indian Ocean, the historic lighthouse, and the old town is magical.
- Dutch Reformed Church (1755): Beautiful church with tombstones in the floor telling stories of Dutch colonists.
- Historic Gate: The main gate with the VOC emblem (Dutch East India Company) reminds of 150 years of Dutch rule.
- Flag Rock: The southwesternmost point of the fortress — perfect for sunset.
- Maritime Museum: Small but fine exhibition on the maritime history of the region.

- Stilt Fishermen: The iconic fishermen on stilts at Koggala (15 minutes east) are one of Sri Lanka's most famous photo motifs — however, they mainly pose for tourists today and expect 500–1,000 LKR.
