Tangalle — Quiet Beaches & Turtles★★
Tangalle (also Tangalla) is the quieter, less touristy counterpart to Mirissa and Unawatuna — perfect for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle. The long, palm-fringed beaches are often deserted, the accommodations have more charm than mass hotels, and at night, sea turtles lay their eggs on the beach.
Beaches
- Medaketiya Beach: Long, wide sandy beach with good waves (caution: strong currents!)
- Silent Beach: Hidden dream beach with palms and rocks, ideal for relaxing
- Rekawa Beach: Turtle nesting beach. From November to April, green sea turtles and hawksbill turtles come ashore at night to lay their eggs. Guided observation tours from 1,500 LKR (~4.30 €).
Mulkirigala
A rock temple 16 km north of Tangalle — often referred to as "little Dambulla." Five levels with cave temples, Buddha statues, and wall paintings, topped by a dagoba with a 360-degree view. Much less visited than Dambulla and no less impressive.
💡 Tipp
Tangalle is the perfect stopover on the way from Mirissa to Yala — plan two nights, relax on the beach, and go to Rekawa for turtle watching in the evening. The beaches can be dangerous for swimmers — watch for red flags!
