Douz

★★★ Douz — The Gateway to the Sahara

Douz is the last town before the great Sahara and the most important starting point for desert expeditions. The small town (35,000 inhabitants) on the southern edge of the Chott el-Jerid marks the transition from the inhabited world to the Erg (sand desert). Beyond Douz begin the dunes of the Grand Erg Oriental — a sand desert that stretches into Algeria and Libya.

The Desert Experiences

Douz offers various ways to experience the Sahara:

★★★ Overnight in the Desert Camp

The absolute highlight of a trip to Tunisia. By camel or 4x4, you head into the dunes, where camps of Berber tents are set up. Dinner under the open sky (couscous, grilled lamb), Berber music by the campfire, then sleep under the clearest starry sky you've ever seen. No light pollution, the Milky Way stretches from horizon to horizon.

  • Budget Camp: 40–60 TND per person (simple tents, mattresses, communal meals)
  • Comfort Camp: 100–150 TND per person (proper beds, carpets, private tent, multi-course dinner)
  • Luxury Camp: 200–400 TND per person (heated tents, private bathroom, gourmet food, champagne under the stars)

★★★ Camel Ride

Camel rides of various lengths start from Douz:

  • Sunset Ride: 2 hours, 30–40 TND. Ideal for a taste.
  • Half-Day Ride: 4–5 hours to the first big dunes and back. 60–80 TND.
  • Multi-Day Ride: 2–7 days of camel trekking through the desert with overnight stays under the open sky or in nomad tents. From 150 TND/day. The most authentic desert experience.

★★ Thursday Market

Every Thursday, Douz transforms into a huge market. Nomads from the surrounding area bring camels, sheep, and goats, as well as dates, spices, and crafts. The camel market is particularly fascinating — hundreds of dromedaries are traded, and bargaining is done loudly in Arabic and Berber.

★★ Sahara Festival

Every December/January, Douz celebrates its famous Festival International du Sahara — a four-day festival with camel races, equestrian games, folk dances, bird of prey shows, and Fantasia performances. Thousands of visitors come, and the atmosphere is unique. Book early — accommodations fill up quickly.

Arrival: Louage from Tozeur (1.5h via Chott el-Jerid, 5 TND). Louage from Gabès (2h, 4 TND). Most desert tours are booked locally or in hotels. Compare offers and negotiate the price!

💡 Tipp

The best time for the Sahara is October to March — pleasant 20–28°C during the day, cool at night (bring a sleeping bag!). In summer, the desert is untravelable (50°C+). For the camel ride: long pants, sunscreen, and above all, comfortable underwear — after 4 hours, you'll know why.
