★★★ Ksar Ghilane — Oasis in the Middle of Nowhere

Ksar Ghilane is Tunisia's most remote and romantic oasis. In the middle of the Grand Erg Oriental, surrounded by massive sand dunes, lies a natural thermal pool (30°C warm water!), fed by an underground spring. Additionally, there are the ruins of a Roman fort (Tisavar), which once marked the southern border of the empire.

The journey is already an adventure: The last 75 km from Douz lead over an unpaved track that can only be traveled by 4x4 or quad. The reward: a handful of desert camps between dunes and palms, the warm thermal water for bathing, and a silence that can be heard.

What to Experience

• Thermal Spring: The warm pool (approx. 30°C) in the middle of the desert is surreal. Especially magical at sunrise or sunset. The water is rich in minerals and supposedly healing.
• Dune Experience: The dunes around Ksar Ghilane are among the highest in Tunisia (up to 100 meters). Sandboarding, quad tours, or simply climbing the dunes barefoot and enjoying the sunset.
• Roman Fort: The ruins of Tisavar — a desert fort from the 3rd century AD — lie on the edge of the oasis. Here once ended the Roman Empire. The walls are remarkably well preserved.
• Starry Sky: Ksar Ghilane has practically zero light pollution. The starry sky here is one of the clearest in Europe and North Africa. Milky Way, shooting stars, planets — all visible to the naked eye.

Accommodation

Several desert camps offer overnight stays in Berber tents or solid bungalows. Most have a restaurant, campfire, and organize camel rides and dune tours. Prices: 80–200 TND per person with half board.

Arrival: Only by 4x4 or organized tour. From Douz (75 km track, 2h), from Matmata (100 km, 3h). Most hotels in Douz, Tozeur, and Djerba offer day or two-day tours (from 150 TND per person). If driving yourself: SUV/4x4 is mandatory, GPS recommended, bring enough water and fuel!
