Burger — America's National Dish
The Hamburger is America's most democratic dish — whether for $2 at In-N-Out or $30 in an upscale restaurant, the basic formula remains the same: a juicy beef patty in a soft bun. But the range is enormous:
- Fast-Food Classics: In-N-Out Burger (West Coast, the best fast-food burger in the USA — order "Animal Style"), Shake Shack (East Coast, the New York Smash Burger), Five Guys (everywhere, fresh ingredients, huge portions), Whataburger (Texas, a religion).
- Smash Burger: Thin patties pressed onto a hot griddle for maximum crust. The trend of recent years. Great at Smashburger and countless local spots.
- Classic Diner Burger: Thick, medium-rare patty with Lettuce, Tomato, Onion (LTO) and Pickle. The archetype.
- Regional: The Jucy Lucy in Minneapolis (cheese INSIDE the patty), the Butter Burger in Wisconsin, the Green Chile Burger in New Mexico.
In-N-Out Secret Menu: "Animal Style" (burger and/or fries with grilled onions, extra sauce, and mustard), "4x4" (four patties, four slices of cheese), "Protein Style" (in lettuce wrap instead of bun). Every Californian knows these orders.
