Diner Culture
The American Diner is more than a restaurant — it is a cultural monument. These chrome-clad eateries with their neon signs, vinyl booths, Formica counters, and jukeboxes have been America's most democratic dining room since the 1920s: The CEO sits next to the truck driver, and everyone gets the same coffee with free refills.
What to order in a diner:
- Breakfast (all day!) — "Eggs any style" (fried, scrambled, omelet), bacon, pancakes with maple syrup, hash browns, toast. The "Grand Slam" or "Lumberjack Breakfast" is a plate that will keep you full all day.
- Burger & Fries — The diner burger is the archetype: flat patty, grilled on the griddle, American cheese, in a soft bun.
- Milkshakes — Thick, creamy milkshakes (chocolate, vanilla, strawberry) served in a metal cup. The epitome of Americana.
- Pie — Apple pie, cherry pie, lemon meringue pie — in the glass case next to the register. With ice cream or whipped cream.
- Coffee — Endlessly refilled (free refills). American filter coffee is thin compared to European coffee, but a social act.
💡 Tipp
Diners are the best breakfast restaurants in the USA — a complete breakfast with coffee costs $8–15, and the portions are huge. Tip for the waiter: 18–20%, even at breakfast!
