Medical Care

Medical care in Bali is above average for Southeast Asia — at least in the tourist centers. However, for serious emergencies, one must be flown to Singapore or Australia.

Hospitals & Clinics:

  • BIMC Hospital Kuta — The best address for tourists. International standard, English-speaking staff, 24-hour emergency room. Jl. Bypass Ngurah Rai 100X, Kuta. Tel: +62 361 761 263. Also located in Nusa Dua.
  • Kasih Ibu Hospital — Good hospital in Denpasar (Jl. Teuku Umar 120) and Tabanan. Cheaper alternative to BIMC.
  • Siloam Hospital — Modern hospital in Kuta with good facilities.
  • RSUP Sanglah — Bali's largest public hospital in Denpasar. Affordable, but crowded and language barriers.

Pharmacies (Apotek) are everywhere. Many medications that require a prescription in Europe are available over the counter here — antibiotics, painkillers, antihistamines. Nevertheless: Always consult a doctor for serious complaints.

Vaccinations: No mandatory vaccinations, but recommended: Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Tetanus, Rabies (if you spend a lot of time in rural areas — stray dogs are a real problem in Bali). Malaria is not an issue in Bali (but it is in Lombok and Flores). Dengue fever is possible year-round — mosquito protection is the best prevention.

Achtung

Be sure to take out international health insurance with repatriation coverage! Medical treatments in Bali often have to be paid in advance (credit card!), and evacuation to Singapore costs €30,000-50,000. Providers: HanseMerkur, ADAC, Allianz, or through your credit card.
