Renting a Scooter

The scooter (simply called "motor" in Bali) is the main mode of transport on the island — and for tourists, the most flexible way to explore Bali. But be careful: Traffic in Bali is chaotic and dangerous, and the accident statistics for tourists on scooters are alarming.

Rental prices: 60,000-80,000 IDR per day (€3.40-4.50) for a 110-125cc scooter (Honda Vario, Scoopy, or Beat). Weekly price: 350,000-500,000 IDR. Monthly rental: 1,000,000-1,500,000 IDR. Helmet is included (but bring your own, better one — rental helmets often do not provide adequate protection).

Driver's license: Officially, you need an International Driver's License with a motorcycle category (Class A) — you can get it in Germany at the driver's license authority for about €15. Without an international license, fines of 500,000-1,000,000 IDR may be imposed during police checks. The insurance does not cover accidents without a valid license — this is the crucial point.

Insurance: Most travel insurance policies cover scooter accidents only if you have a valid license and wear a helmet. Check this before your trip!

Achtung

Bali has one of the highest traffic accident rates in Southeast Asia. The most common causes of accidents for tourists: alcohol at the wheel, no experience with left-hand traffic, excessive speed, and flip-flops instead of sturdy shoes. Always wear a helmet, closed shoes, and long pants. Drive defensively, especially at night. If you have no motorcycle experience — don't do it and hire a driver.
