Kibera — Community Tours★★
Kibera is one of the largest informal settlements in Africa — estimates range from 250,000 to over 1 million residents on just 2.5 km². It lies right next to affluent neighborhoods like Karen and Langata, showcasing Nairobi's starkest social divide.
Guided Community Tours are organized by residents who grew up in Kibera. They not only show the challenges (lack of infrastructure, overpopulation) but especially the incredible energy and creativity of the community: schools, art projects, recycling initiatives, music studios, and social enterprises.
Recommended providers:
- Kibera Tours — community-led, proceeds go to local projects
- Victoria Knits — women's cooperative that makes products from waste and yarn
Important: Only photograph with permission, never go without a local guide, and only book with community-owned providers — no "slum safaris" from outsiders.
Achtung
Visiting Kibera on your own is disrespectful and potentially unsafe. Only with local, community-led tours — they decide what is shown, and the income stays local.
