Nairobi National Park★★★
This is no joke: Lions, rhinos, giraffes, buffaloes, and leopards live just 7 km from the city center — with Nairobi's skyscrapers as a backdrop. The Nairobi National Park is unique worldwide: 117 km² of wilderness on the edge of a metropolis.
The park was established in 1946 and is fenced on three sides — the southern side is open, allowing animals to migrate between the park and the adjacent Athi-Kitengela plains. Particularly good to see:
- Black rhinos — the park is one of Kenya's most successful breeding programs
- Lions — several prides, especially active in the morning
- Giraffes, zebras, wildebeests — large herds in the open savannah
- Over 400 bird species — a paradise for birders
The best time for a game drive is early morning (6:00–9:00 am) or late afternoon (4:00–6:30 pm). At midday, the animals retreat to the shade.
💡 Tipp
Perfect for the first or last safari day: Those who are at the gate by 6 am have the best chances of seeing rhinos and lions — and are back at the hotel for breakfast.
