Discover Nairobi

Nairobi — affectionately called "Nairobbery" or "Green City in the Sun" — is a city of contrasts. With nearly 5 million inhabitants in the metropolitan area, it is the largest city in East Africa and an economic powerhouse: UN headquarters for Africa, tech start-up scene (Silicon Savannah), hub for safari travel, and a culinary scene offering everything from street food to fine dining.

The city is situated at an altitude of 1,660 meters, making the climate surprisingly pleasant: daytime temperatures of 22–28°C, and it can cool down to 10°C at night. Pack a sweater!

For most travelers to Kenya, Nairobi is the starting point — and deserves at least 2–3 days. The Nairobi National Park (lions with skyline!), the David Sheldrick Trust (baby elephants!), the Giraffe Centre, and the Karen Blixen Museum are unforgettable.

Orientation

Nairobi is sprawling and not particularly pedestrian-friendly. You will be traveling a lot with Uber/Bolt or taxis.

  • CBD (Central Business District): The city center — loud, hectic, but with the National Museum, City Market, and Kenyatta International Convention Centre. Safe during the day, avoid at night.
  • Westlands: Modern Nairobi with shopping malls (Sarit Centre, Westgate), restaurants, and nightlife. Safe and good for hotels.
  • Karen: Green, affluent suburb in the southwest, named after Karen Blixen. Home to the Giraffe Centre, Blixen Museum, and Kazuri Beads. Quiet and safe.
  • Langata: South of the center, near Nairobi National Park. David Sheldrick Trust, Bomas of Kenya.
  • Gigiri: UN district in the north, Village Market (upscale shopping), many embassies.
  • Kibera: One of the largest informal settlements in Africa, right next to affluent neighborhoods. Guided community tours possible and recommended.

💡 Tipp

Uber and Bolt work excellently in Nairobi and are safer than street taxis. Always use the app — prices are fair and transparent, usually 3–8 USD per ride.
