Ålesund — Art Nouveau by the Sea★★

Ålesund is arguably Norway's most beautiful small town—and it owes this to a catastrophe. On January 23, 1904, a major fire destroyed the entire wooden city center. The reconstruction in just three years resulted in a unique collection of Art Nouveau architecture: turrets, bay windows, curved facades, floral motifs, and dragon heads—a fantastic mix of European Art Nouveau and Norwegian National Romanticism.

Highlights

 • Aksla Viewpoint: 418 steps (or by car) up to the Fjellstua—the view over the city on its islands, the Sunnmøre Alps, and the sea is one of the most beautiful in Norway.
 • Art Nouveau Centre: Museum in the former Svane Pharmacy. Tells the story of the fire and the reconstruction. Audio guide in German.
 • Atlanterhavsparken (Atlantic Park): One of the largest saltwater aquariums in Northern Europe. Feeding of penguins and seals, diving pool.
 • Runde: The bird island Runde (1-hour drive) is home to 500,000 seabirds in summer, including thousands of puffins (Lunde). Norway's bird paradise.

💡 Tipp

Ålesund is the ideal starting point for the Geiranger–Trollstigen Norwegian Scenic Route. Plan half a day for the city and a full day for the drive over Trollstigen to Geiranger (or vice versa). The view from Aksla at sunset is unforgettable.
