Food & Drink on the West Coast
Western Norway is fish country. The cuisine is shaped by the sea and fjord—fish is served fresher here than anywhere else.
What you must try
- Fiskesuppe: Creamy fish soup with salmon, cod, and shrimp—Norway's comfort food. Available on every corner in Bergen.
- Smalahove: Sheep's head—the notorious western Norwegian specialty. Not for the faint-hearted, but a tradition (in November).
- Fårikål: Lamb with cabbage—Norway's national dish. Hearty and perfect for cold days.
- Raspeballer: Potato dumplings with meat—western Norwegian soul food.
- Bergen Fish Cakes (Fiskekaker): Fresh from the market, with remoulade on bread.
Where to eat in Bergen
- Enhjørningen (The Unicorn): Upscale fish restaurant in a Bryggen building. Stockfish menu. Expensive but unique atmosphere.
- Colonialen: Bergen's best restaurant (Michelin-recommended). Norwegian ingredients, creative cuisine.
- Pingvinen: Traditional Norwegian food in a cozy pub atmosphere. Fårikål, Kjøttkaker, Fiskesuppe. Very popular.
- Mathallen Bergen: Food court with local specialties—cheaper than the fish market.
💡 Tipp
Bergen is known as the "Rain Capital of Norway" (over 200 rainy days/year). But: A rainy day in Bergen has its own charm—the wooden houses shine, the rain drums on the cobblestones, and a hot coffee or fish soup tastes twice as good. Always have a rain jacket with you!
