Bergen Fish Market★★
The Fish Market (Fisketorget) at Vågen harbor has been Bergen's culinary heart since the 13th century. Today, there are two areas: the outdoor market (May–October) with open-air stalls and the year-round Mathallen indoor market (Fisketorget Innendørs).
Offerings include fresh shrimp (reker), king crab, salmon, whale meat, stockfish, reindeer jerky, and fish soup (fiskesuppe). Prices are touristy (a portion of king crab from 250 NOK / 22 €), but the quality is excellent. For a more authentic (and cheaper) experience, locals go to Mathallen Bergen in the Strandgaten district.
💡 Tipp
The fish market is touristy and expensive. The best fish soup in Bergen is said to be at Søstrene Hagelin (Strandgaten) or Enhjørningen (Bryggen). For shrimp: Buy directly from the shrimp fishermen at the harbor (if they are there)—the freshest and cheapest.
