Practical Information for Lofoten & Northern Norway
Getting to the Lofoten
- Flight: Widerøe flies from Bodø to Leknes or Svolvær (25 min., from 500 NOK / 45 €). SAS/Norwegian from Oslo via Bodø.
- Ferry: Bodø → Moskenes (3.5 hrs, car + 2 pers. from 900 NOK / 80 €). Book in advance in summer!
- Car: Via the E10 from the mainland (ferry Bognes–Lødingen or bridge at Raftsundet).
- Hurtigruten: Stops in Stamsund and Svolvær.
Getting Around the Lofoten
Rental car is almost indispensable — the E10 connects all villages, but the distances are greater than expected (Svolvær–Reine: 120 km, 2.5 hours with photo stops). Bicycle is a wonderful alternative in summer — relatively flat but windy. Buses run infrequently.
Accommodation
The Rorbuer (fishing huts) are the typical Lofoten experience: wooden cabins right by the water, often with kitchen and living space. Prices: 800–2,500 NOK (72–225 €) per night. Book weeks in advance in summer! Camping and wild camping (Allemannsretten) are possible everywhere.
Weather
Thanks to the Gulf Stream, the Lofoten are milder than expected: summer temperatures 12–18°C, winter rarely below -5°C. But: It can rain and storm at any time. Always bring warm layers, a rain jacket, and a hat — even in July.
Achtung
The Lofoten in July/August are now heavily visited. Campsites are full, Rorbuer are booked out, and the hiking trails (especially Reinebringen) are overcrowded. If possible, come in June or September — almost as beautiful, much quieter. In winter (October–March), the Lofoten are a dream for Northern Lights photographers, but many hiking trails are snow-covered.
