Senja — The Little Sister of the Lofoten★★
Senja is Norway's second-largest island and is often referred to as the "little sister of the Lofoten" — with the great advantage of being much quieter and less touristy. The west coast offers the same dramatic landscape: rugged mountains, white beaches, fishing villages, and spectacular views.
Highlights
- Norwegian Scenic Route Senja: The road along the west coast offers breathtaking viewpoints, including Tungeneset (rock needles in the sea, wooden walkway to the tip) and Bergsbotn (viewing platform over the fjord).
- Husøy: Tiny fishing village on a mini-island — one of the most photogenic places in Northern Norway.
- Segla (639 m): The hike to the distinctive rock tower above the Mefjord is challenging, but the view is Lofoten-quality.
- Hamn i Senja: Former trading center, now a charming hotel in historic buildings.
💡 Tipp
Senja can be perfectly combined with Tromsø: ferry from Botnhamn to Brensholmen (1 hour) or via the bridge at Finnsnes. Those who find the Lofoten too touristy will love Senja — the same landscape, a fraction of the visitors.
