La Gomera

La Gomera is the second smallest of the Canary Islands (370 km², approx. 22,000 inhabitants) — and the most unspoiled. No hotel complexes, no airport with direct flights from the mainland, no mass tourism. Instead: a UNESCO-protected primeval forest from the Tertiary period, deep ravines (barrancos), the steepest roads in Europe, and a whistling language found nowhere else in the world. Columbus made his last stop here in 1492 before crossing to America — and since then, the island has refreshingly changed very little.
