Dining & Drinking in Muscat
Muscat is a culinary melting pot: Omani cuisine meets excellent Indian, Lebanese, Thai, and international restaurants here. The best addresses — from street food to fine dining:
Budget Restaurants€
Bin Ateeq · Al Ghubra
The most famous traditional Omani restaurant in the city — and rightly so. Shuwa (when available, usually Thursdays/Fridays), Mashuai (whole grilled kingfish on lemon rice), Harees, and Mishkak skewers. You sit on the floor in a Majlis room with carpets and cushions — it doesn't get more authentic. Main courses 2–4 OMR.
Automatic Restaurant (Al Mina) · Mutrah Corniche
No typo — that's its real name. One of Muscat's oldest restaurants (since the 1960s). Simple Omani-Indian cuisine: Biryani, Saloona, Samosas, and the best Chai Karak in town. Everything under 2 OMR. No frills, maximum flavor.
Muscat Grill · Ruwi
Popular spot for affordable grilled dishes: Mishkak skewers (0.5 OMR/piece), grilled chicken, kebabs. Served with fresh Rokhal flatbread and spicy sauces. Ideal for a quick, filling stop between sights.
Ruwi Street Stands · Ruwi High Street
In the evenings, Ruwi transforms into a huge street food paradise: Indian dosas, Omani shawarma, Pakistani chapli kebabs, and freshly squeezed juices. 0.30–1.50 OMR for a complete meal. The best (and cheapest) way to experience Muscat's culinary diversity.
Mid-Range Restaurants€€
Bait Al Luban · Mutrah Corniche
The best restaurant on the Corniche — with a rooftop terrace offering panoramic views over the harbor and mountains. Traditional Omani cuisine at an upscale level: Shuwa (Fridays!), Mashuai, Harees, along with fresh seafood. The sunset from up here is priceless. Reservation recommended on weekends.
Kargeen Café · Madinat Qaboos
A magical garden under a huge banyan tree, illuminated by hundreds of lanterns. Kargeen serves Omani-Lebanese fusion cuisine: mezze platters, grilled dishes, fresh juices, and the best shisha varieties in Muscat. In the evenings, the atmosphere is enchanting — the most beautiful place in Muscat for outdoor seating. Main courses 3–6 OMR, shisha 2 OMR.

The most authentic Muscat experience: Enjoy a steaming hot Chai Karak — strong tea with milk, cardamom, and sugar — at a street stand for 0.10 OMR (25 cents!).
