Royal Opera House★★
High Culture in the Desert
The Royal Opera House Muscat (ROHM) is a passion project of the late Sultan Qaboos — a music-loving man who played the lute himself and founded a complete symphony orchestra. Opened in 2011, the opera house is architecturally stunning: Contemporary design meets Omani building tradition with colonnades, marble floors, and intricate wood carvings.
The program is internationally top-notch: From Puccini to Arabic classics, from Plácido Domingo to Yo-Yo Ma — the world's best artists perform here. The acoustics are among the best worldwide.
Even without a performance, a visit is worthwhile: Guided tours (daily, in English) showcase the opulent interior, and the adjacent cultural district offers galleries, restaurants, and a well-kept park.
💡 Tipp
If you want to attend a performance, book online in advance — the best shows sell out quickly. Dress code: Smart Casual (no shorts, no flip-flops). The atmosphere is unique: Omanis in white dishdashas and their wives in splendid garments next to tourists in evening attire.
Evening Program & Nightlife in Muscat
Muscat is not a party city — but the evening program has its own charm, much more authentic than the club scene in Dubai.
Evenings in Muscat
- Corniche Walk (from 5:30 PM): The Mutrah Corniche becomes the city's catwalk in the evenings: Families stroll, children play, fishing boats return home. The atmosphere is magical — especially during sunset. Afterwards, enjoy a Chai Karak at one of the stands (0.10 OMR) and watch the hustle and bustle
- Mutrah Souq (4:00–9:00 PM): In the evenings, the souq is at its liveliest. The labyrinth of alleys, illuminated by warm lamps, the scent of incense — a time travel. Haggle for silver jewelry and buy spices at dusk
- Kargeen Café (from 6:00 PM): The magical garden under the banyan tree, hundreds of lanterns, shisha, mezze, and fresh juices. Muscat's most beautiful evening spot. Reservation recommended on weekends
- Al Mouj Marina (from 7:00 PM): The restaurant mile at the marina. Relaxed atmosphere, international cuisine, sea breeze. Often live music on weekends

Alcohol is only available in hotels and licensed restaurants. The best hotel bars in Muscat:
