National Museum of Oman
The National Museum (opened in 2016) is the most modern and comprehensive museum in the country — and a must-visit for anyone wanting to understand Oman. On two floors and in 14 thematic galleries, it tells the story of the country from the Stone Age to Vision 2040:
- Gallery "Land & People": Geology, flora, and fauna of Oman — with an impressive ophiolite model showing how the seabed became a mountain range
- Gallery "Maritime History": Authentic dhow models, navigation instruments, and the history of the Omani maritime empire from Zanzibar to China. A 1:1 replica of a trading dhow is the centerpiece
- Gallery "Weapons & Armor": Hundreds of historical Khanjar daggers, swords, and firearms — the development of Omani warfare over centuries
- Gallery "Intangible Heritage": Music, dance, poetry, and the UNESCO-listed Ibadi manuscripts
- Gallery "Omani Renaissance": Sultan Qaboos' transformation from 1970 to today — with before-and-after pictures that leave you speechless
Bait Al Baranda
A lovingly curated museum in a historic house that tells the natural history and geology of Muscat. Interactive displays about fossils, the formation of the Hajar Mountains, and the coastal ecosystem. Small but excellent — and almost never crowded.
Children's Museum
Ideal for families: Interactive exhibitions on science, nature, and Omani culture. Children can build dhows, test falaj systems, and wander through a miniature Oman.
💡 Tipp
The National Museum is air-conditioned and thus the perfect place for the hot midday hours between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm when you don't want to be outside. Plan for 2 hours — the maritime gallery alone deserves an hour.
