The Perfect Half-Day: Nakhal & Hot Springs
An underrated excursion that many tourists overlook: The Nakhal Fort dramatically perches on a rocky outcrop above a palm oasis — the perspective from below, with the Hajar Mountains in the background, is one of the best photo opportunities in Oman. Admission: 3 OMR. Right at the foot of the fort are the Ain al-Thawwarah: natural hot springs (about 40°C) that bubble up in a palm-lined oasis. Take off your shoes, dip your feet in the warm water, and enjoy the view of the fort above you.
Insider Tip: Birkat Al Mouz
On the way to Nizwa lies the abandoned village of Birkat Al Mouz at the foot of Jebel Akhdar — a crumbling oasis of mud houses, surrounded by a still-functioning falaj system that irrigates the palm groves. Few tourists venture here, but the atmosphere is magical: The ruins in the warm light, the trickling of the falaj water, and the mighty mountains in the background. Free and accessible at any time. From here, the road to Jebel Akhdar begins (checkpoint: 4x4 only!).
💡 Tipp
The combination of Bimmah Sinkhole + Wadi Shab is the most popular day trip from Muscat — and rightly so. Start early (7:00–8:00 am), then you're at the sinkhole before the buses arrive and have the whole morning for Wadi Shab. Alternatively: For those less sporty, head to Nakhal Fort + hot springs instead — shorter, more relaxed, but no less impressive.
