Akershus Fortress & City Hall★★
The Akershus Fortress (Akershus Festning) has towered over the harbor since 1299 and is Oslo's oldest building. In the 17th century, the medieval castle was transformed into a Renaissance fortress. Today, it houses the Norwegian Resistance Museum (Hjemmefrontmuseet), which impressively documents the German occupation from 1940–1945, and the Defense Museum.
The fortress grounds are freely accessible and offer beautiful walking paths with fjord views. In summer, concerts and events take place here. Directly below the fortress is the City Hall (Rådhuset, 1950) — a massive brick building where the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded every year on December 10. The interior hall with its monumental murals on Norwegian history is free to access.
