Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the largest city in the Canary Islands and one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Spain — an Atlantic metropolis with 380,000 inhabitants that combines European, African, and Latin American influences. The city stretches over a narrow peninsula (La Isleta) and the adjacent coast, and those who only know it as a cruise stop miss one of Europe's most underrated cities.

Vegueta — the historic founding district (1478) — has been recognized as a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage since 2004 and is architecturally fascinating. The cobblestone streets, quiet squares, and colonial mansions are reminiscent of Havana or Cartagena — no coincidence, as the conquistadors set out for the New World from here, and the architecture became a model.

The highlights of Vegueta:

  • Catedral de Santa Ana — The mighty cathedral (construction began in 1497) combines Gothic, Renaissance, and Neoclassicism. Climbing the tower (1.50 €) offers the best view over the old town.
  • Casa de Colón — Columbus stopped here on his first voyage in 1492 to have his ship repaired. The museum in a beautiful palace with green wooden balconies documents the discovery voyages and the connection of the Canary Islands with America. Admission: 4 €.
  • Museo Canario — Excellent archaeological museum on the culture of the indigenous people (Guanchen). Mummies, ceramics, skulls, idols. Admission: 5 €.
  • Mercado de Vegueta — The Art Nouveau market (1858) is a culinary experience: tropical fruits, Canarian cheese, Gofio, fresh fish. On Sunday mornings, a flea market takes place outside.

Triana: North of Vegueta lies the business and shopping district of Triana with the promenade Calle Mayor de Triana (pedestrian zone with Art Nouveau facades), the Parque San Telmo, and the lively Mercado del Puerto — a converted market hall that today, with over 30 gastro stands, has become the best food court in the Canary Islands.

Playa de Las Canteras: The 3 km long city beach is regularly ranked among the best city beaches in the world — and this praise is deserved. Fine golden sand, offshore reefs (La Barra) that ensure calm water, surf spots at the southern end (La Cícer), and a lively beach promenade with restaurants and bars. The water temperature is 19–23 °C year-round.

💡 Tipp

Vegueta is most beautiful on Sunday: less traffic, flea market in front of the Mercado, and many museums have free admission. The Triana district is a 10-minute walk from the harbor. The yellow Guagua bus (city bus) costs 1.40 € per ride.
