Roque Nublo★★★
The Roque Nublo — the "Cloud Rock" — is the landmark of Gran Canaria and one of the most impressive geological monuments in the Canary Islands. The 80-meter-high basalt monolith rises at an altitude of 1,813 meters from a high plateau in the center of the island and was known to the indigenous people (Guanchen) as a sacred site.
The hike to Roque Nublo is a must-do on Gran Canaria. From the parking lot on the GC-600 road (near La Goleta), it's about 1.5 km (30–40 minutes) on a well-marked path through pine forest up to the base of the rock. The path is moderately challenging — no difficult climbing passages, but sturdy footwear is recommended. At the top, a 360° panorama awaits you, which on clear days extends to Teide on Tenerife.
Next to Roque Nublo stands the Roque del Fraile (the "Monk's Rock") — a rock needle that looks like a praying monk. Together, the two rocks form an unforgettable photo motif, especially in backlight at sunset.
The mountain region in the center: The surroundings of Roque Nublo — the Caldera de Tejeda — is Gran Canaria's "grand canyon": A huge volcanic depression, surrounded by rugged mountain ridges and crisscrossed by deep barrancos. The road from Tejeda to Artenara (the highest municipality in Gran Canaria, 1,270 m) offers spectacular views. In the village of Artenara, many houses are carved into the rock — there is even a cave church (Ermita de la Cuevita) and a cave restaurant (Restaurante Mirador La Cilla, main courses from 10 €).
💡 Tipp
The hike to Roque Nublo is most beautiful at sunset — but plan enough time for the return trip in the dark (bring a headlamp!). In the morning, the visibility is generally better than in the afternoon. There is no water or supplies at the top — bring everything yourself.
