Puerto de Mogán — Little Venice★★
Puerto de Mogán is the most charming coastal town in Gran Canaria — a small fishing village on the southwest coast, earning its nickname "Little Venice" from the Bougainvillea-covered canals that run through the harbor. Whitewashed houses with blue, yellow, and green shutters, flower pots at every corner, colorful fishing boats in the harbor — Puerto de Mogán is a feast for the eyes and the opposite of the concrete hotels of Playa del Inglés.
The village was planned in the 1980s as an "anti-mass tourism" project: No building may be higher than two stories, the architecture is uniformly Canarian-Mediterranean, and the village has retained its rural character. The result is one of the prettiest places in the entire Canary Islands.
Things to do in Mogán:
- Friday Market — The largest weekly market in southern Gran Canaria. Fresh fruits, cheese, handicrafts, spices, aloe vera products. Worth it!
- Playa de Mogán Beach — Small, sheltered sandy beach with calm water, perfect for families. Lounger + umbrella: 6 €.
- Diving — Puerto de Mogán is one of the best diving spots in the Canary Islands. Clear visibility (20–30 m), water temperature 19–24 °C, and the sunken shipwreck "Cermona II" at 18 m depth is a highlight. Introductory dive from 55 €, dive with equipment from 40 €.
- Submarine Tour — The yellow submarine "Golden Shark" dives to a depth of 20 m. Through the large portholes, you can see schools of fish, rays, and the wreck. 35 € adults, 20 € children. Touristy, but kids love it.
- Boat Tour to Güi Güi — By boat (from 20 €, round trip) to the remote Güi Güi beach, accessible only by boat or a challenging 3-hour hike. One of the wildest and most beautiful beaches in Gran Canaria.
💡 Tipp
Visit the Friday market before 11 a.m., after which it gets crowded. The restaurants at the harbor basin are all a bit more expensive — better prices and more authentic cuisine can be found in the alleys behind the harbor. The restaurant "La Bodeguilla Juanana" has excellent tapas starting at 5 €.
