Teror is the religious capital of Gran Canaria and one of the best-preserved historical villages on the island. The small town (12,000 inhabitants) is located at an altitude of 543 meters in the green, fertile north and is famous for the Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pino — the sanctuary of the patron saint of Gran Canaria. According to legend, the Virgin Mary appeared in a pine tree in 1481, and today's baroque basilica (18th century) is the most important pilgrimage site in the Canary Islands.

The Plaza del Pino in front of the basilica is surrounded by magnificent colonial houses with the typical Canarian wooden balconies — the best-preserved square architecture on the island. Particularly beautiful: the Casa de los Patronos de la Virgen (17th century), now a museum with original furnishings (admission: 2 €). The balconies are carved from Canarian pine wood (tea wood) and painted in shades of brown and green.

Sunday Market: Every Sunday, Teror transforms into a huge market. Hundreds of stalls offer local specialties: Chorizo de Teror (soft, spreadable paprika sausage — unique!), Queso de flor (flower cheese made from thistle flowers), Bienmesabe (almond dessert), honey, jams, and handicrafts. The market is authentic and as popular with locals as it is with tourists. Folklore groups play between the stalls, and the bars serve small chorizo rolls (Bocadillo de chorizo, 2.50 €).

Surroundings: From Teror, it's worth taking a trip to the Finca de Osorio — a 200-hectare estate with an old chestnut forest, botanical gardens, and hiking trails. Free admission, perfect for a quiet morning.

💡 Tipp

Arrive early for the Sunday market (before 10 a.m.) and have breakfast in one of the bars on the plaza — Café con leche and Bocadillo de chorizo de Teror is the ultimate Gran Canaria breakfast. Park on the outskirts and walk to the center. On September 8th (Día del Pino), the great pilgrimage takes place — thousands of pilgrims walk from all parts of the island to Teror.
