La Geria—wine growing in volcanic craters★★★

La Geria, LZ-30, zwischen Uga und San Bartolomé

La Geria is one of those images you never forget: In a pitch-black volcanic landscape, thousands of crescent-shaped stone walls (zocos) stretch out, with a single vine growing in the center—protected from the wind, nourished by the volcanic soil, watered by the moisture that the lapilli (volcanic ash) draws from the air. This unique cultivation system worldwide was developed after the devastating volcanic eruptions of 1730–1736 and has been on the proposal list for UNESCO World Heritage since 2024.

The winemakers dig funnels 2–4 meters deep into the lapilli layer until they reach fertile soil. In the center, they plant the vine. The semicircular wall (zoco) protects against the trade winds. The result: wine from a lunar landscape.

The Wines of Lanzarote

The main grape variety is Malvasía Volcánica—a dry to semi-dry white wine with aromas of tropical fruits, minerality, and a characteristic volcanic note. Additionally: Diego (white), Listán Negro (red), Moscatel. Lanzarote's wines are rarely available outside the Canaries—to taste them, you must come to the island.

Bodegas in La Geria

  • Bodega La Geria: The largest and most well-known. Beautiful visitor center, wine tasting (3 wines from 6 €), restaurant with terrace and view over the wine landscape. A good introduction.
  • Bodega El Grifo: The oldest bodega in the Canaries (founded in 1775!) and one of the oldest in Spain. Small wine museum with historical presses and barrels. Tour + tasting from 8 €. Their premium Malvasía is excellent.
  • Bodegas Rubicón: Family business since 1979. Excellent Malvasía Semi-Dulce (the perfect dessert wine). Tour + 4 wines: 12 €.
  • Bodega Stratvs: The most modern operation, architecturally appealing. Biodynamic cultivation. Wine tasting with cheese and olives from 15 €.

Price Overview: A bottle of Malvasía Volcánica costs from 8–15 € at the bodega, 15–30 € in the restaurant. Compared to mainland Spain, this is more expensive—but the production is labor-intensive and the quantity limited.

💡 Tipp

Drive the LZ-30 from Uga to Mozaga—the road cuts through La Geria and offers the most iconic photo opportunities. Best visited in the late afternoon when the sun turns the black lava golden. For those who prefer not to drive: Several providers offer wine tours by bus from 45 € per person (3–4 bodegas, including tastings).
