Food & Wine on Lanzarote€€

Lanzarote's cuisine combines Canarian tradition with volcanic identity—the island has its own culinary signature that sets it apart from the other Canaries. The combination of unique wines, freshly caught fish, and dishes that have been prepared in the same way for centuries makes dining here a true experience.

Specialties of Lanzarote

  • Papas Arrugadas con Mojo: Like on all the Canaries, the staple dish—wrinkled potatoes with red (spicy) and green (mild) mojo. Particularly popular on Lanzarote: Mojo de queso (cheese mojo, a creamy variant with goat cheese).
  • Caldo de Millo: Corn soup with vegetables and bacon—a traditional farmer's dish still served in many village restaurants on Lanzarote. Hearty and warming.
  • Pescado a la Lanzaroteña: Fresh fish (often Vieja/parrotfish or Cherne/wreckfish) in a sauce of tomatoes, peppers, onions, and white wine. Simple preparation, excellent taste.
  • Pulpo frito: Fried octopus—crispy on the outside, tender on the inside. Particularly good in the fish restaurants of El Golfo and Órzola.
  • Gofio Desserts: Mousse de Gofio (roasted flour as a sweet cream, often with honey and almonds) is the typical dessert.

Wine Recommendations

The Malvasía Volcánica is the star, but also try:

  • Malvasía Seco (dry): Mineral, fruity, perfect with fish. Top producers: El Grifo, Bermejo, Stratvs.
  • Malvasía Semi-Dulce: Semi-dry to sweet, ideal as an aperitif or with desserts. Rubicón and La Geria make excellent ones.
  • Listán Negro (red wine): Light, fruity, hardly any tannin—not a great red wine, but an honest companion to meat dishes. Best slightly chilled.
  • Diego (white): Rare grape variety, grassy-fresh, only a few bodegas produce it as a single variety. Insider tip.

Price Orientation: Glass of wine in a restaurant 3–5 €, bottle 15–25 €. At the bodega from 8 € per bottle.

Restaurant Recommendations

  • La Tegala (Mácher): Lanzarote's fine dining restaurant. Creative Canarian cuisine, tasting menu from 65 €. Reservation required.
  • El Risco (Famara): Right on the cliffs of Famara, spectacular location. Fish and seafood, 15–25 € per dish.
  • Casa Torano (El Golfo): Fresh fish with sea view. The seafood paella (for 2 people, about 30 €) is legendary.
  • Restaurante Castillo de San José (Arrecife): Manrique design meets upscale cuisine. Glass front to the sea. 20–30 € main course.
  • La Bodega de Santiago (Yaiza): Rustic bodega atmosphere, good meat dishes, local wines. 12–20 €.
  • Chiringuito at Playa de Famara: For a relaxed surfer lunch. Fresh fish, Papas Arrugadas, beer. From 10 €.

💡 Tipp

The best culinary experience on Lanzarote: Buy a bottle of Malvasía and Majorero cheese at the Sunday market in Teguise, drive to a viewpoint (Mirador de Haría is perfect) and picnic with a view over the volcanic landscape. Simpler, better, and cheaper than any restaurant.
