Further Highlights

Besides the major attractions, Lanzarote has several places and experiences worth a detour—especially if you spend more than a week on the island.

Jardín de Cactus★★

Calle de los Aljibes, s/n, 35542 Guatiza
Täglich 10–17:45 Uhr.
Erwachsene 6,50 €, Kinder (7–12) 3,25 €. Kombikarte 6 Zentren: 35 €.

César Manrique's last major work (completed in 1990): a cactus garden with over 4,500 specimens from 450 species, created in a former quarry (Rofera). The terraced layout, the old windmill above, and the careful composition of volcanic rock and cacti make the garden one of the most photogenic places on the island. Small but intense—30–45 minutes are enough. The café is typically elegant Manrique.

Cueva de los Verdes★★

LZ-204, 35520 Haría
Täglich 10–17 Uhr (letzte Tour 16 Uhr).
Erwachsene 10 €, Kinder (7–12) 5 €. Kombikarte 6 Zentren: 35 €.

An underground lava tunnel stretching over 6 km from the Monte Corona volcano to the sea — one of the longest in the world. The walkable section (about 1 km, 50-minute guided tour) leads through breathtaking cave formations subtly illuminated by Manrique. At the end awaits an optical surprise, which will not be revealed here — it is a typical Manrique stroke of genius.

The Cueva de los Verdes and the Jameos del Agua are parts of the same lava tunnel — combining them shows the contrast between "pure nature" (Cueva) and "Manrique art" (Jameos).

El Golfo & the Green Lake★★

On the west coast, on the edge of the Timanfaya area, lies the small fishing village El Golfo—and immediately south of it, one of Lanzarote's most photogenic spots: the Lago Verde (Charco de los Clicos). An emerald green crater lake, framed by a half-submerged black crater wall and a black lava beach. The green color comes from an alga (Ruppia maritima) that thrives in the salty, isolated water.

The lake is not accessible (nature reserve), but from the viewpoint above you get the iconic view. Afterwards: eat fish in the village—the three restaurants by the sea (Casa Torano, El Bogavante, La Cocina de Colacho) serve the freshest fish on the island (12–22 € per dish).

Salinas de Janubio

The largest sea salt flats of the Canary Islands are located on the southwest coast and offer a fascinating play of colors, especially in the afternoon light: pink, white, and blue in geometric basins against black lava. Salt production dates back to the 19th century and is still ongoing today — the "Flor de Sal" (flower of salt) is sold as a gourmet product (from €4 per jar). A viewpoint on the LZ-703 offers the best view. No entrance fee.
