Teguise & the Sunday Market★★

Teguise, 35530, Lanzarote
Sonntagsmarkt: 9–14 Uhr. Castillo: täglich 10–16 Uhr.
Markt: kostenlos. Castillo de Santa Bárbara: 3 €.

Teguise was the capital of Lanzarote for over 450 years (1418–1852) before Arrecife took over this role. The town in the island's interior has preserved its historical face: cobbled streets, stately houses from the 16th–18th centuries, a large church (Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe), and a weekday tranquility that feels almost surreal.

The Sunday Market

Every Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Teguise transforms into the largest market in the Canaries. Over 400 stalls fill the streets and squares: Canarian handicrafts, ceramics, leather goods, aloe vera products, cheese, mojo sauces, jewelry, vintage clothing. Plus live music on several squares—from Canarian folklore (Timple guitar!) to street performers.

Honestly: The market is touristy and can become overwhelmingly crowded on peak days (December–February, Easter). Still, it's worth it because the setting—the historic town, the architecture, the atmosphere—is unique. Those looking for souvenirs will find the island's largest selection here.

Tips for visiting the market:

  • Arrive early (9–10 a.m.): Less crowding, better selection of stalls, parking still available.
  • Explore the side streets: The main axis is the busiest, the side streets often have the more interesting stalls.
  • Bargaining is accepted, but not for food.
  • Parking: Free parking on the outskirts, about a 10-minute walk. In the town center: no chance.

Castillo de Santa Bárbara

The fortress on the volcanic cone Guanapay (452 m) above Teguise houses a small museum on Lanzarote's pirate history. More important than the museum is the view: 360° panorama over the entire island. Admission: 3 €.

💡 Tipp

During the week, Teguise is a completely different place—quiet, deserted, atmospheric. The Palacio del Marqués (now a cultural center, free) and the Iglesia de Guadalupe can be visited at leisure. A combination with the nearby Jardín de Cactus (10 km) is recommended.
